Description

The Landlord Learning and Networking Forum is an annual event organized by Landlord’s Self-Help Centre to provide a learning platform for the small landlord community. The Forum introduces service providers which support the small landlord community; offers educational presentations to keep landlords current on the changing regulatory environment which governs them and their tenancies; and provides an opportunity for networking with peers to share experiences and best practices. The Forum is presented in conjunction with LSHC’s Annual General Meeting.

We have put together a comprehensive program that will feature industry experts sharing information and offering the following presentations:

1. Common Pitfalls for Self-Represented Parties at the Landlord and Tenant Board - Presented by Eli Fellman, Counsel, Tribunals Ontario

2. The Nuts and Bolts of Tenant Screening and Selection:

  • The Impact of the Ontario Human Rights Code on Tenant Screening Presented by Carly Bowie, CERA - Centre for Equality Rights in Accommodation
  • Landlord Best Practices for Tenant Screening and Selection Presented by Jason McGuire, Real Property Management Service Inc.

3. Landlord's Own Use: What you need to know! Presented by Jane Ferguson, Toronto lawyer specializing in Residential Tenancies

The Forum also includes an opportunity to meet a variety of service providers for you to learn about programs and services which support small landlords and ask any questions. Light refreshments and time to network with small landlord peers to share renting experiences and best practices.

LSHC's Annual General Meeting is also presented in conjunction with the Landlord Forum and will include a report from the President highlighting the impact of the recent Legal Aid funding cuts, a Financial Update from the Treasurer, and a Report on Clinic Activities.

Landlord's Self-Help Centre is a non-profit specialty clinic funded by Legal Aid Ontario operating with a province-wide mandate to provide information and support services to the small landlord community on a non-profit basis and educate the community in landlord and tenant relations.

This is achieved through the delivery of services which include general information, referral and summary advice; providing educational programs, learning tools and material through our website (www.landlordselfhelp.com); and representing the interests of the small landlord community in law reform activities aimed at improving the regulatory environment governing residential tenancies in Ontario.

Landlord's Self-Help Centre is governed by a ten-member volunteer Board of Directors who reflect the community served and have taken an interest in the work of LSHC. The Board is comprised of members of the community and professionals who bring skills and experience to support the governance of the organization. The Centre operates with five full-time employees and assists approximately more than 16,000 clients each year.
